Swimming Pool Level Description
The Rock Valley Public Swimming Pool is located in the center of Rock Valley. From Highway 18 turn north on 13th Avenue and go one block. The pool is located on the west side of the street.

The American Red Cross offers comprehensive, developmentally appropriate Swimming and Water Safety courses that teach you, your child or other family members how to swim skillfully and safely, and think and act safely in, on and around the water.
Parent and Child Aquatics - (about 6 months to 3 years):
Parents & children learn together through a fun-filled class to increase children’s comfort in the water and build a foundation of basic aquatic and water safety skills.
Preschool Aquatics “NEW”:
Three fun, age-appropriate levels teach basic aquatic safety and survival skills to increase children’s comfort level in and around the water. These classes are NOT required to enter Learn-to-Swim
Level 1.
Preschool I --“Guppies” - (about 4 to 5 years old):
*All skills done with support:
Enter & exit water using ladder, steps or side
Blow bubbles through mouth & nose
Submerge mouth, nose and eyes
Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
Front and back glides
Recover from a front glide to a vertical position
Roll from front to back and back to front
Tread with arm and hand actions
Alternating & simultaneous leg actions on front & back
Alternating & simultaneous arm actions on front & back
Combined arm & leg actions on front & back
Plus age-appropriate water safety topics
Preschool II – “Mudturtles” - (about 4 to 5 years old):
*All skills done with support:
Enter water by stepping in
Exit water using ladder, steps or side
Bobbing
Open eyes under water & retrieve submerged objects
Front & back floats and glides
Recover from a front or back float or glide to a vertical position
Roll from front to back and back to front
Tread water using arm and leg actions
Combined arm & leg actions on front & back
Finning arm action on back
Plus age-appropriate water safety topics
Preschool III – “Sunfish” - (about 4 to 5 years old):
Enter water by jumping in
Fully submerge and hold breath
Bobbing
Front, jellyfish and tuck floats
Recover from a front and back float or glide
Back float and glide
Change direction of travel while swimming on front or back
Tread water using arm & leg actions
Combined arm & leg actions on front & back
Finning arm action on back
Plus age-appropriate water safety topics
If a student successfully passes this class they will automatically enter Learn-to-Swim Level 2 the following year

Learn-to-Swim Classes - (about 6 years through adult):
Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills

Level 3: Stroke Development:
Enter water by jumping from the side
Headfirst entries from side in sitting & kneeling positions
Bobbing while moving toward safety
Rotary breathing

Change from vertical to horizontal position on front & back

Flutter, dolphin and scissors kicks
Front crawl & elementary backstroke
Plus age-appropriate water safety topics
Level 4: Stroke Improvement:
Headfirst entries from side in compact & stride positions
Swim under water
Feet first surface dive
Survival swimming
Front crawl & backstroke open turns
Tread water using 2 different kicks
Front & back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly
Flutter & dolphin dicks on back
Plus age-appropriate water safety topics
Level 5: Stroke Refinement:
Shallow-angle dive from the side
Tread water
Tuck & pike surface dives, submerge completely
Front flip turn & backstroke flip turn while swimming
Front 7 back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly
Standard scull

Fundamentals of Diving
GuardStart - (ages 11-14):
Learn what it takes to be a great lifeguard—from lifesaving & leadership skills to fitness & professional development. Helps prepare you for Lifeguard Training. 3-year program
Basic Water Safety - (14 years old to adult):
Course designed to present easy-to-remember safety tips for community and backyard pools, spas, lakes, water parks, oceans, rivers & more! Ideal for parents or individuals involved in activities in or around water. The BWS course does not require in-water skills, but does have optional water activities included. Red Cross Certification valid for 3 years will be awarded upon successful completion.
Lifeguard Training
